Funding for local CE Schemes could be cut dramatically
By Claire Quinn
TWO Waterford City CE Schemes will loose €37,000 in funding between them if the proposed Government cuts to CE schemes goes ahead.
Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has been urged to reverse the 66% cut to the material and training allowance for CE schemes, which, according to Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane will make many of them unviable.
The SAOR CE Scheme provides training and education opportunities for adults who are recovering from substance misuse in Larchville and Lisduggan.
They have 18 CE workers and will lose €18,000 in core funding if the cuts go ahead.
Likewise, the Compact Community Scheme operating out of Lady Lane House in the City has 19 CE workers and provides meals on wheels, maintenance work in homes for the elderly and general caretaking work in the community. This project will see a reduction in €19,000 annually if the cuts proceed.
Senator Cullinane said, “The 66% cut to the material and training allowance for CE schemes will make many schemes unviable. This allowance goes towards providing training, insurance, rent, equipment, tools, telephone and other administration expenses. Such a drastic cut will severely curtail the ability of some schemes to provide vital community based services.”
The Government made a commitment that no scheme will close pending a formal review. However, many schemes do not know where they stand and without the necessary funding will have no choice but to curtail services, he said.
