eircom broadband now available in Annestown

AS part of its aggressive broadband rollout programme, eircom has broadband enabled a further nineteen exchanges across the country, including Annestown in Co. Waterford.

With eircom broadband now available to phone lines in Annestown home and business customers can avail of Internet access which is up to 20 times faster than a dial-up connection.

The enablement of the nineteen exchanges comes as part of eircom’s public commitment to broadband enable over 400 exchanges across Ireland including a further eight exchanges in the Waterford area. Our determined efforts to increase broadband availability nationwide means that more than 900 exchanges, representing 96% of the working telephone lines in Ireland will be connected to a broadband exchange within the next two years.

Broadband take up continues to grow and Ireland is moving steadily towards closing the gap on the EU average for broadband take up. Current estimates show Ireland’s take up rate to be in the region of 16%. The most recently quoted official figure for the EU average take up rate is 16.9% as at January 2007 (see note 1 to editor). The current estimated EU figure is 18%.

Commenting Rex Comb, CEO, eircom said “Our latest figures show Ireland is closing the gap and catching up with the EU average for broadband take up. eircom is one hundred per cent committed to making broadband available to as many parts of the country as we can. The enablement of these 19 exchanges, which means an additional 12,000 customers now qualify for broadband, demonstrates we are delivering on the commitments of what we intend to be an aggressive rollout programme in the coming months.

Between now and the end of the year we expect to have an additional one hundred exchanges enabled.”
