Soccer: Controversial goal wins the day
By: Adrian Flanagan
Factory League Plate Semi-final David Flynn Associates 2, Termoframe 1
A HIGHLY entertaining semi-final of the plate section of the Factory League was won by a controversial goal by David Flynn Associates at rain soaked Ozier Park on Friday night last.
David Flynn’s claimed victory and booked their place in the final of the plate, where they will meet Morris Builders Providers in tonight (Wednesday) showpiece.
However, Thermoframe defender Martin Reid was fuming by the decision of referee Mark Corcoran to leave what proved to be the winning goal from Danny Murphy with 16 minutes remaining in the game to stand.
Referee Corcoran rightly award a free kick to David Flynn Associates. Reid then claimed that he asked the referee to blow the whistle before the kick could be taken. However, this was not the case as Mark Browne took a quick free kick over the top and with the Thermoframe defence and goalkeeper at sixes and sevens, Danny Murphy shot to the net.
HIGH DRAMA
Former Waterford United and Kilkenny City great Reid made a bee-line for the referee after he pointed to the centre circle and awarded what proved to be the winning goal and was very fortunate that the referee only reached for his top pocket and not his back pocket following comments that were made to him by the defender.
This goal came after Thermoframe had just managed to pull themselves back into the game after falling behind to a goal in the first minute of the second half.
To be honest, despite the decision of the referee to award the goal, in this reporter’s opinion, the best team on the night won the match. They had the better of the chances but they failed to take the opportunities that fell their way. In fact, they should have taken the lead inside the opening three minutes of the contest.
Thermoframe keeper, Glen McGrath failed to deal with an attack from Bobby Keoghan and Browne should have found the back of the net with a right-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area but the ball went wide of the target.
Thermoframe could also count their lucky stars that they didn’t fall behind to another good opportunity after only eight minutes of play in the first half.
Cian O’Brien picked up a pass from the edge of the penalty area and he tried his luck with a fine effort but he fired a rightfooted shot from a good position over the crossbar with keeper McGrath beaten.
SCARCITY OF CHANCES
The game then hit a patch where neither side to create a chance for love nor money. The first chance created by Thermoframe came after 21 minutes.
An excellent corner from the right from Mick Madigan met the head of the unmarked Kevin Power but his downwards header from inside the penalty area went inches wide of the target with keeper Gary Keane in no man’s land.
Danny Murphy could have given David Flynn Associates the lead after 24 minutes, but after racing clear of his marker, his leftfooted shot from 20 yards had keeper Glen McGrath beaten but the ball just went the wrong side of the post. Before the sound of the half time whistle, Bobby Keoghan had two good chances to give David Flynn’s the lead. The first came after 28 minutes but his curling right-footed angled effort went over the bar and right on the blow for half time, he tried his luck with an effort from outside the penalty area but his effort was directed around the posts.
SUPER START
The second half was less than sixty seconds old when David Flynn Associates took the lead. A cross from the right from Billy Ryan met the head of the unmarked Danny Murphy and he headed to the back of the net from eight yards but in truth keeper McGrath could have done better to stop the ball entering the net.
Murphy then had a shot cleared off the line shortly afterwards but on 37 minutes, Thermoframe equalised and what a goal it turned out to be.
Mick Madigan took a quick corner kick with Mick Dunphy and from the edge of the area at an angle his right-footed effort ended up in the left-hand top corner of the net giving keeper Keane no chance whatsoever. Then came the goal that proved to be the winner when a quick Mark Browne free caught Thermoframe napping and Murphy tucked the ball to the net.
Thermoframe had a chance to equalise in the final minute but Graham Coady headed a cross from Mick Madigan, who had linked up with Martin Reid over the bar when he should have scored.
