New purpose must be found for Kilmeaden cheese plant

AN appeal has been made to management in Glanbia to save the 45 jobs due to go from the award-winning cheese production plant in Kilmeaden.

Senator Brendan Kenneally said the announcement was a huge blow to a small rural community that had become the production heartland of a brand-leader in cheese.

‘It will be very difficult to replace these traditional jobs in an area like Kilmeaden. Farmers in the area have been severely put out by the announcement and the future supply of their milk to Glanbia is in jeopardy.

He said he doubted whether the same high-quality award-winning cheese - commonly known as the fillet of cheddar - could be produced elsewhere.

‘My thoughts are with the 45 workers - 41 of them employed on a seasonal basis - and their families. I would urge Glanbia to reverse their decision to axe the jobs. Failing that, the company should try must at least find a new purpose for the factory.

‘I have asked the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Micheál Martin TD, to step up his work with State agencies in an effort to secure fresh investment in the Kilmeaden area,’ said Senator Kenneally.
