Wildcats go down in final game
Bausch & Lomb Wildcats brought the curtain down on their National League season last Sunday with a heavy loss to Dublin City University.
The Dubliners were hot favourites for a home win but even they must have been surprised with the ease of this victory in spite of the fact that Wildcats were short regular center Cathy Kavanagh who is out with a knee injury.
This was by far Wildcat’s poorest performance for some time. DCU are an exceptional team who possess many top internationals but nevertheless they are not a 56 point better team than Wildcats, even though a score line of 93-37 would suggest so.
Right from the tip off DCU went about their business in a clinical fashion making the most of every opportunity while Wildcats had a similar amount of scoring chances but trailed 16-3 after just 4 minutes due to poor finishing.
As the game progressed things improved slightly as Wildcats total reached 9 points by the end of the first quarter, leaving DCU in command 289. The National Cup winners extended their advantage prior to a hot patch from Wildcat’s Siobhan Power who hit 9 points in a 3 minute spell. In fact this helped Wildcats to outshoot DCU 18 points to 15 in this second quarter however still left the score 43-27 to DCU at half-time.
BIG EFFORT Wildcats coaches asked for a big effort in the final quarters from their team, sadly it was DCU who upped their game and ran riot scoring for fun.
The Wildcats team looked in a spin as they made decisions one would not expect from a primary school team. For the entire second half Wildcats managed just 10 points while DCU notched up 50. It is best not to go into individual criticism of players but after a long hard season one would not expect to witness such a poor show from so many players who have done themselves and their club proud for most of what was always going to be a difficult season.
OUTLOOK With the season behind them now Wildcats must look ahead and the outlook is bright even though results may not indicate that. The coaching team of Sean O’Regan, Tommy O’Mahony and Kieran Byrne sated to a very young team at the start of the season that it would take at least 3 years before they would become a solid unit at the top level. They also promised all players involved that they would give each player quality playing time and with this in mind they might risk losing games that they could possibly win.
Well the coaches stuck to their word and speaking to the same coaches they are more than happy with the way the season went. They also stated that they intend to do serious off season work with each player in order that they will be better prepared for the new season which starts in September.
UNDERAGE UPDATE Las t week the U12 team travelled to Kilkenny to play Berkley in a cup game and they came home with a good win. The girls played well with several good baskets from Rebecca Mulhall and Sarah Whelan.
The U14 team had a busy weekend travelling to Tralee to play in a tournament hosted by Tralee Imperials. It was an early start and long day but well worthwhile as the team had competitive games against some of the best U14 teams in the country. All the girls played well and were unlucky to lose out by a single point in the semi final to Brunell who went on to win the final. Then on Sunday the U14s were back in action in Cork League against St. Anthony’s who had knocked them out of the cup several weeks previous.
This time on home turf however Wildcats called the shots and with a great team performance ran out 41-30 winners. On the day Sinead Kindlon and Dana Aspell played very well. Unfortunately the scheduled U16 game was cancelled.
Next Saturday 13th the U15s travel to play Donoughmore.
